Scottish Drumming

Equally important in the world of bagpiping is drumming.  Three types of drums are played: the snare (side), the tenor, and the bass.

Bass Drum

The largest and lowest in pitch, keeps the beat for all the performers in the band.

Tenor Drum

The tenors complement the bass drum and are considered part of the bass section, but are higher in pitch.  Tenor drummers are easily recognized by the way they flourish their drumsticks while playing.

Side Drum

The majority of the drum section is made up of Side (snare) drummers. Their drums are the highest in pitch and the loudest.  Snare drummers play elaborate rhythms that fit with the melody the pipers play, and provide dynamics to the ensemble.
